Herpes: Symptoms and Treatment

What is herpes?
Herpes infects primarily through direct contact with herpes wounds, but the virus can also be transferred even when there are no visible wounds. There are two main types of herpes virus: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).
- HSV-1, which often causes oral herpes, known as mouth herpes, typically infects through mouth-to-mouth contact. It may include kisses, sharing of drinks or dining sets, or using the same toothbrush. HSV-1 can also be transferred to the genital area through oral-genital contact.
- HSV-2 is the type that most often causes genital herpes. This type infects mainly through sexual contact, inclusive vaginal, anal and oral sex. HSV-2 can be transferred even when the person does not have visible wounds or feels symptoms.
Herpes Symptoms:
Symptoms of Oral Herpes (HSV-1):
- Small blisters or wounds around the lips, mouth or face, often known as cold sores.
- Itching, burning sensation or pain around the mouth before the outbreak of blisters.
- Wounds can ooze and form crusts as they heal.
- In some cases, fever, swollen lymph nodes and sore throat, especially at the first outbreak.
Symptoms of genital herpes (HSV-2):
- Small blisters or wounds in the genital area, buttocks or thighs.
- Wounds can cause pain, itching and discomfort, especially when they burst and turn into open wounds.
- Pain by urination.
- At the first outbreak, the symptoms may also include flu -like symptoms such as fever, headache and muscle pain.
- Raised lymph nodes in the groin area.
Treatment of Herpes:
Treatment of herpes focuses on reducing the duration and severity of outbreaks. At the first outbreak of herpes genitalis, treatment with virus inhibitory medications such as Aciclovir, Valaciclovir or Famvir may be effective. These tablets taken over a period of 7-10 days can help shorten the duration of an outbreak.
For people with frequent outbreaks, for example 6-12 times a year, preventative treatment with these medicines is recommended. This type of preventative treatment is known to have minimal side effects and can be effective in reducing the frequency of outbreaks.
It is important to start treatment as soon as symptoms of a herpes outbreak are felt. Having a pack of medicine available or a prescription ready can therefore be advantageous. Generally, it is recommended to avoid sexual activity when there are visible outbreaks and always have sex with a condom to reduce the risk of infection. Good hand hygiene is also important to prevent the spread of the virus to other parts of the body, or to other people.
Further information:
- The first outbreak of herpes can be more serious and last longer than subsequent outbreaks.
- After the first outbreak, the virus enters a latent phase where it remains in the body and can be reactivated, leading to new outbreaks. These later outbreaks are often less severe and lasts less time.
- Some people experience regular outbreaks, while others rarely or never experience an outbreak after the first.
